Principles of Failure Analysis

Course Overview
Failure of engineering structures in industry can cause loss of life, unscheduled shutdowns, increased maintenance and repair costs, and damaging litigation disputes. To prevent future recurrence of the problem it is essential to carry out an investigation aimed at determining the root cause of failure. The results of the investigation can also be used as the basis for insurance claims, for marketing purposes, and to develop new materials or improve the properties of existing ones. The treatment of this subject is therefore important in order to develop preventive measures minimizing the incidence of failure and reducing their associated cost to industry. All engineering failures, without exception, occur at the weakest link in the design–fabrication–performance chain of a product. The ability to identify this weakest link and propose remedial measures is the key for a successful failure analysis investigation.
An important feature of this course is that it not only demonstrates the methodology for conducting a successful failure analysis investigation, but also will be an intensive three days of practical, how-to-do-it training. In a series of case histories, this course will provide the attendees with the tools required to reach a sound conclusion about the cause of component failure and will provide proper recommendations for preventive measures. A comprehensive overview of the field, this course covers three principal areas of interest: Procedures for Analysis, Failure Mechanisms and Failure in specific industries. Causes of failures are explained. Many case histories are highlighted throughout the course. Because steel is the most common and widely used metallic material in our industry, the majority of examples and case studies will be focused on steel.

Course Properties and Syllables
This Course will be Suitable for:
People who are new to failure analysis
Engineers, technicians and managers who need to update their knowledge in this practical area of engineering
Those interested in understanding how knowledge of failure analysis can lead to better productivity
Note: Because failure analysis investigation is a multidisciplinary approach, all attendees must have an adequate knowledge of a number of engineering disciplines, particularly Materials Science & Engineering.

Course objectives
Successful delegates will learn:
Learn what failure analysis can mean in terms of profitability - and liability
Understand general procedures, techniques and precautions in failure analysis
Be able to analyze the factors that cause failure
Understand what environmental sources are responsible for failures and ways to prevent them
Grasp the many inter-related factors involved in examining a fracture
Learn how to separate material (chemistry, microstructure) causes for failure from non-materials causes
